The use of ferrous slag
Ferrous slag is a resource that has been tried and tested for decades and is primarily used in cement and concrete, in transport construction materials (road, path and hydraulic engineering) and in fertilisers. Like all other raw materials and products, slag is subject to constant monitoring and is approved for various applications in accordance with national and international regulations.
Cement and concrete
The technologically outstanding properties of slag-containing cement and concrete include high strength, high durability, high resistance to chemical stress, and excellent resistance to frost and heat. Slag-containing building materials are therefore frequently used in structures subject to the most demanding requirements, such as industrial buildings, bridges or locks.
Fertilisers
Fertilising lime (converter lime) produced from ferrous slag serves to buffer natural and anthropogenic acids that enter the soil. A site-specific soil pH value is restored and stabilised, thereby ensuring sustainable soil fertility. Converter lime can be used on all soils prone to acidification and for all crops. Furthermore, converter lime supplies plants with valuable micronutrients. For decades, it has ensured species-rich grassland and high-yield arable farming whilst protecting the environment.
Transport construction materials
Transport construction materials containing aggregates made from steel furnace slag or blast furnace slag remain stable for a long time, have a long service life, offer exceptional load-bearing capacity and are heat-resistant. As they are not affected by weather conditions, they can be processed all year round and used in layers with or without binding agents. The result: safe, durable transport routes, fewer construction sites and thus significant time and cost savings.
