Transformation of the steel industry and ‘new slags’
The decarbonisation of the steel industry is giving rise to new by-products, known as ‘new slags’: firstly, EHMS (electric hot metal slag), also known as SAF slags (SAF – Submerged Arc Furnace Slags), produced in the smelting reduction furnace; and secondly, in an electric arc furnace, through the addition of scrap and DRI (Direct Reduced Iron), EAF slags (EAF – Electric Arc Furnace Slags).
Research is currently being conducted into the potential applications of ‘new slags’ as a construction material in cement and concrete, as well as in transport infrastructure construction, as fertiliser or in new fields of application, and into their conditioning for optimal use.
